Why don't we use the old west system of law and order?

Where, if you wished to avoid imprisonment, you'd be forced to have a quickdraw showdown with the county Sheriff or Chief of Police. I think it would be an interesting spectacle and it would save on prison space. Since the Chief/Sheriff would most likely win most of the time it would be a fair proposition.
