Why is mitosis a continuous process, not a series of separate events?

The purpose would be defeated if it were a discontinuous process. The cell can remain in doldrums with nearly all genes switched off and stopped in the middle due to one reason or another.When the cell in on the brink of mitosis it has to come downhill without a break.
