What can i do about my astra ?

hello i have a 99 Treg astra 1.7 TD and i love it !!! problem is on saturday it died and it hasnt wanted to start since ive checked the fuel filters and the injectors dont seem to be getting any fuel i have enquired to quite a few garages and mechanics but none seem to be interested as it would be too much work ? i dont know much about cars but i am on a steep learning curve as i would love to repair it myself but dont know where to start. Its not starting and had to be towed home from where it stopped and it hasnt started since a few people have told me it is the fuel pump or the ecu connected to it but without my haynes manual(on order) i dont know where to start. I have searched the internet since trying to find pics or even a simple explination as to how i could check if my fuel pump or ecu is actually broken without taking it to a garage as most of them are unwilling to even look at it ( one told me to bury it !!!) any help would be fab as i dont want my car to be buried!!! joolz
